Adult Sailing School at the BYC
Complete details of the Adult Sailing School programs offered this summer at the Beaconsfield Yacht club can be found on the SWEN website.
The Beaconsfield Yacht Club in association with SWEN offers several sailing programs and courses for adults in the evenings and on weekends. Below you will find extracts from just some of the many courses offered.
Adult Sailing Programs – Beaconsfield Sailing Club
Set on the shores of Lake Saint-Louis, the Beaconsfield Sailing Club offers an exceptional environment to learn and advance your sailing skills. With steady summer winds, open water, and a welcoming community, our Adult Sailing School delivers a structured, hands-on pathway aligned with Sail Canada’s nationally recognized certification system.
Our philosophy is simple: you learn by sailing. From your first session, you will be actively steering, trimming sails, and participating as part of a crew. Courses are delivered by certified instructors and follow a clear progression—from complete beginner to confident skipper—while maintaining a relaxed, supportive atmosphere on and off the water.
- Start Sailing (Beginner)
New to sailing? This introductory course requires no prior experience. You’ll learn basic sailing terminology, points of sail, and essential safety procedures. Most importantly, you’ll get behind the helm and experience the excitement of controlling a keelboat.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand how wind drives the boat and feel comfortable participating as a beginner crew member.
- Crew Level 1
Build your confidence as an active crew member. This course focuses on practical skills including sail trim, line handling, and coordinated maneuvers such as tacking and jibing. You’ll develop awareness of wind direction, boat balance, and teamwork.
This is where sailing really starts to click—participants gain the rhythm and flow of working together on the water.
- Basic Cruising Standard (Sail Canada)
This nationally recognized certification introduces the skills required to skipper a boat in light to moderate conditions. You’ll learn boat handling under sail and power, docking, basic navigation, and safety management.
Training is structured yet highly practical, with plenty of time at the helm. Successful participants will be able to confidently take responsibility for a small crew and vessel in familiar waters.
- Intermediate Cruising
Ready to expand your capabilities? This course builds on Basic Cruising and introduces more advanced sail trim, efficient boat handling, and navigation techniques. You’ll learn how to plan short passages, manage changing weather, and make informed decisions on the water.
The focus shifts toward independence—developing the judgment and confidence needed for real-world sailing.
- Advanced Cruising
For sailors seeking a higher level of competence, Advanced Cruising emphasizes passage planning, weather systems, and skippering in more challenging conditions. You’ll refine your leadership skills, manage crew dynamics, and handle longer outings on Lake Saint-Louis.
This course prepares you for extended cruising and more demanding sailing environments.
- Docking & Boat Handling Clinic
Docking is one of the most valuable—and often most intimidating—skills for sailors. This focused clinic helps you master close-quarters maneuvering under power, including docking, undocking, and tight-space handling.
With repeated practice and personalized coaching, you’ll gain the confidence to handle a boat smoothly and safely in the marina.
Why Sail in Beaconsfield?
Beaconsfield offers ideal training conditions: consistent winds, open sailing areas, and easy access from Montreal’s West Island. Our fleet of keelboats provides a stable, forgiving platform for learning, while still delivering the performance and responsiveness that make sailing exciting.
Just as important is the community. Sailing here is social, engaging, and welcoming—many participants continue sailing together long after their courses are complete.
Whether your goal is to try something new, earn Sail Canada certifications, or eventually skipper your own boat, our programs provide a clear and rewarding path forward.
